Did you know that sitting in front of a computer could elevate your heart rate, improve fitness, assist in losing weight and build strong leg muscles?
Well it's true, if the computer is one of our four new Ergometers (affectionately called Ergos) now ready for use in the club's Compy Room at Midvale Speed Dome.
What is an Ergo?
It looks like a windtrainer, and essentially it is, but it has a motor and brake and can measure speed, cadence, power output and heart rate
What does it do?
Initially, we are using the Ergos to measure a rider's performance during two time-trials. It's intense, hard work and all over in 15 minutes. Then, future similar tests can demonstrate an increase in fitness and muscle strength.
What else can it do?
Simulate rides and races. A computerised brake applies tension to the windtrainer on uphill climbs, and releases it during descents. You can program a race circuit or ride a pre-loaded circuit, such as the famous Alp de Hues, or Cadel's training ride, complete with scenery. You can even race against 3 other components, so we can do race simulations.
When can I get on?
We are running Ergo testing sessions every Wednesday evening during club training.
What do I need to bring?
Your road bike, with a windtrainer-compatible skewer;
A cadence magnet fitted to your crank;
A Polar compatible heart rate monitor strap (Garmin is NOT compatible);
A water bottle;
A USB stick (any size will do)
How much does it cost?
The Ergos are for the exclusive use of MCC members, and testing sessions are FREE! A gold coin donation will however assist the club in maintaining the ergos and booking service.
Do you have to book a session?
Absolutely. The service is provided by volunteers and so bookings are essential. You will first need to register to use the booking service.
